One issue that the vast majority of human beings deals with is body odor. This can be caused by excessive sweating, but sometimes it isn’t even because of that. Some people are just prone to have more of a body odor than others.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of, really—it’s something natural, something that you really cannot help. That being said, there are definitely ways to keep your body odor under control so that you feel fresher and more confident and don’t cause discomfort to those around you.
What everyone doesn’t know, however, is that a lot of the mainstream deodorants (whether they’re rolling on, stick or spray deodorants) can actually be quite harmful to your health and the environment.
That’s why I came up with thirty-three great deodorant recipes that you can create on your own. The best part is that they are all-natural, perfectly safe and very effective! You may find them to be more effective than all of the store-bought deodorants you’ve tried so far.
1. Danger! Harmful Chemicals in Commercials Deodorants
A lot of people are reluctant to give up their synthetic, store-bought deodorants for a natural alternative.
Nasty Ingredients and Problems
Believe it or not, there are tons of harmful ingredients in almost all the deodorants you see at the store.
If you are someone that is attempting to become healthier by eating more vegetables and fruits, cutting down on fast foods, exercising more often, etc. then your deodorant choices might just be counteracting these healthy choices because of how unhealthy they are.
If you apply deodorant immediately after exfoliating or shaving your body, then the risks that you encounter will be even worse. When you shave or exfoliate, you temporarily have these tiny openings in your skin which allow the chemicals in the deodorant to instantly penetrate the skin without any delay.
Parabens are one of the worst ingredients in store-bought deodorants. Even the deodorants that are labeled as being ‘natural’ contain ingredients such as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and the like.
According to a lot of experts, parabens can cause cancerous tumors. Since the underarms (which is where most people apply their deodorant) is an area that is dangerously close to the chest, you are putting yourself at risk of breast cancer every time you use deodorants with parabens.
Another very common ingredient in deodorants is aluminum. We all know what aluminum is—we use it in the form of aluminum foil all the time.
However, when it’s present in your deodorants, it isn’t quite as harmless. Aluminum has been proven to speed up the development of Alzheimer’s disease—something that I’m sure everyone wishes to avoid.
Some deodorant brands will even sneakily disguise it in their ingredients list by writing ‘alum’ instead of aluminum, which tricks people into thinking it is something completely different.
Even compounds that contain aluminum in addition to other chemicals are harmful, which makes almost all store-bought deodorants a no-no.
Triclosan is yet another very common deodorant ingredient to watch out for. While it is an antibacterial agent, it is usually contaminated with dioxin (according to research) which makes it a carcinogen. For those of you that don’t know, carcinogens are cancer-causing compounds.
The next harmful ingredient is one that most people do not even realize is harmful. It’s an ingredient that is present in the majority of skincare products, including deodorants: Fragrance.
The truth is, whenever you see the word ‘fragrance’ in the ingredients list of a product, you should be on your guard. Even if the fragrance source sounds like a natural one, you can’t know for sure what methods were used to extract that fragrance. Many fragrance ingredients in deodorants are known to cause hormone disruption and severe allergic reactions after being consistently used for a certain period of time.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is another harsh ingredient used in many deodorants. In fact, it’s such a nasty ingredient that it’s even been banned in Europe. It’s a proven skin irritant, as well as a possible carcinogen—that’s enough to make it an ingredient to be avoided at all cost. If that wasn’t bad enough, it can cause dermatitis, eczema, damage to the eyes, kidneys, and liver.
Benefits of Homemade Deodorants and Antiperspirants
The first benefit is that, of course, homemade deodorants can be made to be free of all the horrible toxins and chemicals that are found in commercial deodorants. This way, you will be saving your body from a lot of harms by preventing the dangerous chemicals from entering your bloodstream and causing terrible consequences later on.
A lot of people think that just because they use small amounts of certain commercial deodorants, they don’t have to worry about the chemicals in it. This is not true at all—over time, all of those chemicals will accumulate in your body and cause some serious harm!
Natural homemade deodorants, however, will not cause this problem and will allow you to apply as much as you’d like without having to worry.
The second benefit is one that is related to the antiperspirant abilities of certain homemade deodorants.
As I said in the previous chapter, the fact that commercial deodorants block your pores and do not allow sweat to be released is a bad thing. We need to remove the toxins in our body and cool ourselves down via sweating.
However, homemade antiperspirants can be made in a manner that prevents you from feeling sticky and sweaty but does not block your pores. Homemade antiperspirants focus on absorbing most of your sweat after it is released rather than blocking it completely. This way, natural deodorants will prevent you from feeling disgusting and damp, but will also allow your body to function the way it is supposed to function.
Another reason to switch to natural and homemade deodorants is because of the skincare benefits that they can deliver, depending on what ingredients you decide to use in the formulation.
For example, coconut oil is a popular ingredient in skincare products, as well as homemade deodorants.
Coconut oil is known for its amazing moisturizing abilities, as well as its gentleness (making it great for sensitive skin) and ability to keep the skin soft without feeling sticky.
Natural Homemade Deodorant Recipes
Recipe 1:
6 tablespoons of coconut oil
6 tablespoons of shea butter
4 tablespoons of diatomaceous earth
4 tablespoons of arrowroot powder
5 drops of vitamin E oil
Melt the oils on low heat over the stove in a double boiler or pot, and stir them until they have formed an evenly mixed liquid. Turn off the heat and then allow the mixture to cool a little before adding the arrowroot, diatomaceous earth, and vitamin E oil. After adding those, mix the concoction and pour into container of choice so that it can solidify.
And there you have it—a great recipe for sensitive skin, completely free of baking soda. While baking soda is a very useful ingredient, those with very sensitive skin may react negatively to it.
The diatomaceous earth and vitamin E oil are extra ingredients to give your skin a boost of useful nutrients.
Recipe 2:
6 tablespoons of coconut oil
6 tablespoons of beeswax
6 tablespoons of arrowroot powder
2 tablespoons of cornstarch
1 teaspoon of honey
This recipe makes use of beeswax, which is a great ingredient to use on flaky, dry and sensitive skin.
For this recipe, you will need to heat the coconut oil and beeswax on the stove and stir. Then remove from heat and add the arrowroot powder and cornstarch, mixing those in thoroughly. Lastly, add the honey into the mixture before pouring it into a container. It will form a solid deodorant.
Honey has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it ideal in a deodorant for people with sensitive underarms (or whichever part of the body you wish to use it on). It also has antioxidant properties, so it will improve the quality of your skin, not to mention it smells divine!
If you aren’t a fan of honey’s scent, feel free to remove it and use essential oils instead.
Recipe 3:
6 tablespoons of coconut oil
4 tablespoons of beeswax
2 tablespoons of almond oil
8 tablespoons of arrowroot powder
This deodorant is a pretty basic one, with no strong scent or special ingredients. For someone that wants a hassle-free deodorant for very sensitive skin, however, it’s perfect. Just mix the oils and the beeswax, and then heat the mixture on the stove while stirring. Remove the mixture when it is melted and then add the arrowroot powder and mix that in, too. Pour the mixture into a container, and that’s it. A super simple and gentle solid deodorant.
Recipe 4:
4 tablespoons of coconut oil
2 tablespoons of grapeseed oil
2 tablespoons of olive oil
4 tablespoons of cornstarch
4 tablespoons of diatomaceous earth
This is another recipe that does not have any strong fragrance to it, aside from the sweet smell of coconut oil. Mix and heat the oils over the stove until melted. Then add the corn starch and diatomaceous earth and mix those in well. Pour mixture into a container, and you have a great solid deodorant.
Recipe 5:
4 tablespoons coconut oil
2 tablespoons jojoba oil
5 tablespoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons arrowroot powder
1 drop of peppermint essential oil
Mix the cornstarch and arrowroot powder in one bowl, and melt the coconut oil over the stove. Add the jojoba oil to the coconut oil, and then combine the oil ingredients with the powder ingredients, mixing thoroughly. Pour into a container, and allow it to solidify. This recipe does have a small amount of peppermint oil, which can help alleviate itching and irritation.
